Exhibit: Bio-based SiC Ceramics

Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the most important ceramic materials. Outstanding properties like high strength, high stiffness, excellent thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance make SiC ceramics the ideal materials for use at high temperatures and under harsh environmental conditions. These excellent properties can usually just be achieved at high production costs.

Bio-based SiC ceramics may represent a solution for this problem. At Kompetenzzentrum Holz, due to unique know-how, thermoset based wood polymer composites (WPC) can be produced in various 3D structures using well-established polymer processing techniques. These bio-based WPC green bodies exhibit good dimensional stability and carbon yield sufficient for the conversion to porous carbon templates, which can be further processed to bio-based SiC ceramics using a liquid silicon infiltration process. By variation of the WPC composition and process parameters, the properties of the bio-based SiC ceramics can be adjusted.
